The Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) Interstate Security and Defence Committee has completed a proposed protocol for more effective mechanisms to improve intervention in conflicts in southern Africa.
The committee is made up of defence ministers from the 14 SADC states and has been meeting in the Mozambican capital, Maputo. News reports said that the protocol is expected to be adopted and signed at a summit to be attended by SADC heads of state in Windhoek next month.
Meanwhile, Mozambican President Joaquim Chissano and chairman of SADC has called on member states to intensify sanctions against the UNITA rebel movement. He criticised UNITA leader Jonas Savimbi for continuing the conflict in Angola. Chissano has also called on regional and security experts in the region to speed up the revision of SADC institutions, in particular the Political, Defence and Security Organ.
