    بدأ حجم الكارثة التي تواجه نيبال، بعد أن ضربها زلزال بلغت قوته 7.8 درجة على مقياس ريختر، يزداد وضوحاً ببطء، حيث لقي الآلاف من الناس حتفهم وأُصيب آلاف آخرون، وتحولت المباني إلى أنقاض، وأصيبت الطرق والجسور ونظم الاتصالات بأضرار جسيمة.

    لم يتم بعد الوصول إلى بعض القرى القريبة من مركز الزلزال، مما دفع الكثيرين إلى التكهن بأن الحجم الحقيقي للكارثة قد يكون أكبر بكثير. وتم التعهد بتقديم مساعدات، وبدأت تعبئة فرق البحث والإنقاذ من جميع أنحاء العالم، ولكن هناك تحديات هائلة تواجه الاستجابة لحالة الطوارئ الدولية الكبيرة هذه.
