The Darfur crisis must be viewed in the context of prevailing discourses on pastoralism, climate adaptation, land tenure security, and rights of pastoralists to help set the stage for a lasting peace, according a new report by the Feinstein Center.
The report seeks to address the gap in understanding the livelihoods of the Northern Rizaygat [Arabic-speaking nomads in the Sudanese Darfur states] in the Darfur conflict and their particular vulnerability, and challenges the over-simplified representation of this group as marauding militia.
The Northern Rizaygat have become notorious for their role in the Janjawid militia - instrumental in the Sudanese government’s counter-insurgency campaign in Darfur - and face relative exclusion from international, including humanitarian, action. The Center argues it was vulnerability of livelihoods that drove them to join the counter-insurgency strategy in 2004.
