Rwandan Prime Minister Pierre-Celestin Rwigema has denied allegations that he was involved in the 1994 genocide. He told AFP on Saturday that the accusations were politically motivated by members of his Mouvement republicain et democratique (MRD) expelled from the transitional parliament. The private Rwandan News Agency on Friday quoted MRD member Jacques Maniraguha as saying the “prime minister who is persecuting us is accused of having been involved in the genocide.” A media source in Kigali told IRIN today that despite divisions within the government, the administration is standing by Rwigema. “It’s very messy,” he said. “The problem is we have so many cases of people suspected to have actively collaborated in the genocide in the military and the government.”
