Rebels, Mayi-Mayi hijack boat

Rebels of the Forces pour la defense de la democratie (FDD) together with the Congolese tribal warriors, the Mayi-Mayi, last Sunday [5 August] hijacked a boat which came from the DRC loaded with 300 tons of rice and sugar, Burundi news agency Net Press reported on Thursday. The boat, which was sailing along the shores of Lake Tanganyika towards Uvira, fell into an ambush laid by the rebels who were reportedly aboard another boat near Kazimia village not far from the port of Rumonge, southwest Burundi. Net Press quoted local sources as saying that all those who were aboard the boat were still being held hostage by these “negative forces”. After capturing the boat, the rebels and their Mayi-Mayi accomplices are said to have withdrawn to the Kazimia village.
