Nine killed in Kanyosha

Unknown assailants on Thursday opened fire on a group of people, killing nine near a military checkpoint in Kanyosha commune, Bujumbura Rural province, humanitarian sources working in the province told IRIN. “The group comprised mostly of farmers and traders who were going to town to sell their wares. Most were on bicycles,” a source said. However, army spokesman Colonel Augustin Nzabampema confirmed to IRIN that there was an incident on that road but said it was an ambush on a vehicle. He said he did not have details of the number of casualties, but blamed the incident on rebels.
