Quake kills two, destroys homes in northern Afghanistan

This is the third major quake to hit Afghanistan this year

A magnitude 5.3 earthquake at 00.58am local time on 19 April killed two people, injured six and destroyed dozens of houses in the northern province of Samangan, according to the Afghanistan National Disasters Management Authority (ANDMA).



“Assessments are under way to determine damage levels and needs,” Noor Padshah Kohistani, head of ANDMA’s operations centre, told IRIN.



The US Geological Survey said the quake was 5.7 on the Richter Scale with its epicentre at a depth of 10km.



Magnitude 5.5 and 5.1 earthquakes killed 22 people, wounded 59 and destroyed 290 houses in the eastern province of Nangarhar on 17 April 2009, according to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.
