Widespread displacement in Muhajiriya

Recent fighting in South Darfur has led to widespread displacement of civilians from Muhajiriya, Sheriya and Labado, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), said.

Large numbers of people have arrived in villages and camps in North and South Darfur but the UN World Food Programme was unable to deliver food rations to 89,000 people in Muhajiriya and Sheriya in January.

Tensions remain high in the area, OCHA said in its Darfur humanitarian action bulletin for last week.

The fighting, which started on 15 January and has claimed at least 30 lives, pits Sudanese government forces and the Sudanese Liberation Army/Minni Minnawi faction against the rebel Justice and Equality Movement.
