African leaders gather for Mbeki inauguration

Villagers in the northwest of Central African Republic are seeking safety in urban areas after a spate of kidnappings leaves many destitute when they have to sell livestock to pay the ransom money

African leaders began gathering in South Africa on Tuesday to attend Wednesday's inauguration of Thabo Mbeki, successor to Nelson Mandela.

Reuters reported that African presidents dominated the guest list, with Nigeria's Olusegen Obasanjo repaying Mandela's visit to his inauguration last month.
