President Robert Mugabe was reported to have held talks last week in Accra, Ghana, with President Benjamin Mkapa of Tanzania in a bid to shore up a relationship dented by their differing approaches to the war in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
The Zimbabwe Independent said at the weekend Mugabe had sought to narrow a “widening gulf that could create several enemies for Zimbabwe in East Africa”. The newspaper said relations first suffered when Tanzania withdrew military instructors attached to the DRC government when the war broke on 2 August last year. The following month, Zimbabwe sent an intervention force in support of the DRC government.
