The leaders of Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda today endorsed plans to set up an East African community at the end of July. They also opened the way for Rwanda’s membership of the regional bloc, AFP reported. Kenyan President Daniel arap Moi even proposed a political federation for the region. “I’m suggesting a regional assembly with limited powers,” he said. Summit officials said Rwanda would be free to join as soon as the East African Community treaty is signed, and an application by Burundi would be looked upon favourably.
