Katsina has become the fifth state in Nigeria to adopt Islamic law, Sharia. A bill to this effect entered into force on Tuesday, a day after its signing by Governor Umaru Yar’Adua, ‘The Guardian’ reported.
The Lagos-based daily reported Yar’Adua as assuring non-Muslims that they were safe in the state and that the implementation of the Sharia would not infringe on their rights as citizens of Nigeria who live and operate under the same constitution.
Four other northern Nigerian states imposed Islamic law earlier this year:
Zamfara, Sokoto, Niger and Kano.
