Full Sharia introduced in Kano

Sharia went into full effect on Sunday in Nigeria’s most populous northern state, Kano, one of nine Nigerian states to declare Islamic law in the past year.

Sharia will not apply to the Christian minority in the state, the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) reported. It said the governor of Kano warned against any disturbance of the peace over the Sharia issue and against any attempt by people to take the law into their own hands.

Human rights groups have criticised some of the new measures to be implemented in Kano and other northern states, including amputation for theft.
