Religious group in US for training on peace building

A group of Burundian religious leaders is in the US on a three-week training programme on peace building and reconciliation, the Catholic Relief Services (CRS) reported from the city of Baltimore, the United States.

CRS is facilitating the visit by the delegation, comprising a former prime minister, four bishops, religious and lay community leaders, as well as representatives of women's, youth and rural organisations.

CRS reported on Monday that the delegates were due to undergo training in techniques of reconciliation, trauma and healing of memories; parish building; strategies for building partnerships with ecumenical and civil societies as well as practical techniques for peace building in the context of Burundi. The training will take place in Washington D.C.

The group is due to visit faith-based and secular peace building groups, the UN, the US Congress, American Catholic parishes and Burundians living in the US.

CRS added that the training is expected to lead to a more effective role for the Church in the promotion of peace in Burundi. The group ends its visit on 3 June.
