Fighting erupted on 30 March between Ninja rebels and government forces in the Pool Region of the Republic of Congo. Three days later, Ninjas attacked a train along the line from Pointe Noire to the capital, Brazzaville. Many people were killed or wounded. Some 50,000 people fled the region as a result of these events. When on 9 April government forces were deployed in the capital's neighbourhoods of Bacongo and Makelekele, fear, panic and confusion prevailed.
These events and the urgent need for action drove the UN Children's Fund's (UNICEF) logistics apparatus into high gear. UNICEF's Kent Page describes what happened in an article entitled "UNICEF supply system saves lives in the Congo crisis".
