The leader of the militia Oodua People's Congress, Ganiyu Adams, was arrested on Friday by Ogun state Police and transferred to the state, media organisations have reported. At the time of his arrest, Adams was signing a bond for bail granted to him by a federal judge in a pending case in Lagos State.
Adams was arrested in Lagos, Lagos State, in August, months after he was declared wanted following ethnic violence in 1999. He was arraigned last month on numerous charges including treason, murder, arson, destruction of public property. A Lagos federal judge had granted him bail for which he was signing the bond when security forces of neighbouring Ogun State re-arrested Adams. He has been transferred to Abeokuta, Ogun State, where he would face criminal charges, the media reported. Adams was slated to appear before the Lagos federal court on Tuesday, along with another founder of the OPC, Frederic Fasehun, who was also arraigned on similar charges.
Created in 1995, the OPC purports to protect the interests of Nigeria's Yoruba people. It was banned in November 1999 by President Olusegun Obasanjo following ethnic riots in which hundreds of people died.
