US President George W. Bush has hailed President Isayas Afewerki’s prompt condemnation of the 11 September attack, but appealed to Eritrea to be more vigilant in the global campaign against terror, and to cooperate with the US in gathering information, the US ambassador in Asmara said on 4 October. Speaking on Eritrean TV, the ambassador, Donald J. McConnell, said it was the desire of the US to strengthen relations with Eritrea. The US, he said, would cooperate in Eritrea’s post-war reconstruction and demobilisation programmes.
