Conference on refugees, IDPs underway

A sub-regional conference on refugees and internally displaced persons (IDPs) in the central African region is underway in Bujumbura, Burundi. The three-day conference, convened by the UN’s Standing Advisory Committee on Security Questions in Central Africa, seeks to tackle the causes and consequences of massive population displacements in the central African region. According a statement from the UN Department of Disarmament Affairs, participants will discuss the magnitude of the problem, with a specific focus on women and children refugees as well as the IDPs. They will look into measures that can be taken at national, regional and international levels to address the problem. It is hoped that the conference will culminate with the adoption of a plan of action and programme of assistance for the sub-region.
