A group of 25 defence and police officers from Southern African Development Community (SADC) member countries and Nigeria this week completed a three-week course in aspects of peacekeeping operations.
A spokesman of the UN Training Assistance Team (UNTAT) said the course, held at the SADC Regional Peace Training Centre in Harare, Zimbabwe, was attended by officers from the rank of captain to lieutenant colonel or their equivalent in the police force.
The spokesman said the techniques discussed during the course focused on how to deal with issues of disarmament, demobilisation and reintegration of ex-combatants, humanitarian assistance, HIV/AIDS, gender mainstreaming, children’s rights and the international standards of human rights observation in peacekeeping operations.
“At the end of the course, the participants are expected to understand these principles and be able to apply them on the ground in planning, conducting and coordinating the training of other members for peacekeeping in any given UN peacekeeping operation,” said the spokesman.
