    في الساعات الأولى من صباح الخميس، بدأت المياه تتسرب إلى قارب صيد خشبي متهالك، ينقل حمولة زائدة تشمل حوالي 350 لاجئاً ومهاجراً يأملون في الوصول إلى السواحل الأوروبية، على بعد بضعة أميال قبالة ساحل ليبيا.

    ووفقاً للناجين، بدأ القارب يغرق بعد تدفق المياه من خلال الصدوع التي أصابت هيكله. ولم يتمكن الأشخاص المكتظون تحت سطح السفينة، ومعظمهم من الأفارقة من جنوب الصحراء الكبرى الذين دفعوا مبالغ أقل مقابل رحلتهم، من الفرار من الفتحات الضيقة. ويعتقد أن 150 منهم قد لقوا حتفهم.
