Peace consultations postponed

The Nyerere Foundation has postponed consultations among Burundian delegations in Dar es Salaam, due to start on Monday because of Arusha peace talks facilitator Julius Nyerere’s illness, the Tanzanian ‘Guardian’ daily reported. It quoted an aide to Nyerere, Mark Bomani, as saying a new date would be set later. The consultations were due to be held ahead of the next round of peace talks in November. On Friday, the Hirondelle news agency quoted Bomani as saying the consultations - between the six major sides taking part in the Arusha talks - were an attempt to “reduce differences as much as possible” before the next round. Some of the smaller parties had complained of being excluded, but Bomani denied there was a “hidden agenda”, Hirondelle said. The six sides include the government, the national assembly, the pro-Tutsi UPRONA and PARENA, and the pro-Hutu FRODEBU and CNDD.
