Book launched to explain child rights

    The first ever child-friendly book detailing the rights of children has been released in Ethiopia.

    The colourful 22-page document, which has been produced by the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF), explains 38 rights that affect youngsters around the world.

    UNICEF head in Ethiopia Bjorn Ljungqvist acknowledged that there were problems in Ethiopia in fulfilling rights, but added that awareness was key in overcoming abuse.

    “It uniquely places children at the centre of human rights,” Ljungqvist told a news conference to launch the book. "For children to access those rights then the first step is knowledge.”

    The Convention of the Rights of the Child is the most universally accepted and ratified human rights instrument in history, UNICEF added.

    Dr Bulti Gutema, from the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs, said the book would be vital for parents, families and children themselves.

    “Children are the future of mankind and hold a unique position in society,” he said. “This will play a significant role in providing substantial information on the rights of the child.”

    Some 5,000 books – in five languages - are to be distributed throughout the country in schools and clinics.
