Two mass graves found in Mambasa

    KINSHASA

    Two mass graves have been discovered in Mambasa, 50 km northwest of Beni, in the Ituri district of northeastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), according to the United Nations Mission in the DRC, known as MONUC.

    MONUC was waiting for medical experts to deliver details about the circumstances of the killings, Patricia Tome, its chief of public information, told IRIN on Monday. It is not known how many victims were killed, or when the killings took place.

    Mambasa has been the scene of fighting between three rebel groups - the Mouvement de liberation du Congo, which is allied to the Rassemblement congolais pour la democratie-National (RCD-N) against the RCD-Kisangani-Mouvement de liberation. All three signed a ceasefire agreement on 30 December.

    Tome emphasised that the discovery of the graves was included in a MONUC report, destined for UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Sergio Vieira de Mello, who is currently on mission in the DRC.
