The UN's World Food Programme (WFP), Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) and other humanitarian agencies are preparing a 'Seeds Protection Rations' campaign due to start later this month in war-torn Burundi.
"Everything is ready, and is expected to start on the 15th of this month," WFP spokeswoman Laura Melo told IRIN on Tuesday. The initiative occurs twice a year during the planting seasons.
"This ensures that the seeds are planted rather than eaten," said Melo, adding that people receive food from WFP immediately before and after the seed distribution which is carried out by the FAO.
She said WFP planned to reach 102,250 households with 5,624 mt of food.
The project will be carried out under particularly difficult conditions as it targets provinces such as Bujumbura Rural, Ruyigi, Gitega, Makamba and Rutana, which have had a relatively high incidence of insecurity and displacement since July.
