Political opposition parties which did not sign the Sun City power-sharing accord are demanding to be included in any future government of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
Addressing a news conference this week on behalf of all these parties, Joseph Olenghankoy, leader of the Forces novatrices pour l'union et la solidarite (Fonus) party and head of a coalition of non-signatories to the Sun City accord, said any future government failing to understand that there were three political groupings "was bound for failure".
According to Olenghankoy, the first camp, commonly referred to as "camps de la patrie", consists of signatories to the Sun City accord; the second is that of the "Alliance pour la survie du dialogue" (ASD), made up of the Rwandan-backed rebel Rassemblement congolais pour la democratie (RCD-Goma), the Union pour la democratie et le progres social (UDPS) party of veteran politician, Etienne Tshisekedi and a number of other political parties.
The coalition of political parties in neither the "camps de la patrie" nor the ASD constituted the third political entity, Olenghankoy said.
"We are reiterating our demand that future negotiations take place among the three groups of Congolese," said Olenghankoy, who added that his group did not seek to turn its back on the Sun City accord. "We want simply to put a simplified model into place," he said.
The declaration of Olenghankoy’s coalition comes at time when relations have soured between the Kinshasa government and the Mouvement de liberation du Congo (MLC), the two principal signatories to the Sun City accord.
