Sudanese refugee murdered in Nairobi accommodation centre

    NAIROBI

    A Sudanese refugee was murdered in the early hours of Thursday morning in a Nairobi accommodation centre where he had been placed by the UN refugee agency, UNHCR.

    The victim and his brother were attacked in a Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) hostel in the Kenyan capital at 3am, UNHCR spokesman Emmanuel Nyabera told IRIN on Thursday.

    He was rushed to hospital after being hit on the head with a blunt object, but died shortly afterwards.

    The victim's brother sustained no injuries and was assisting police with investigations, he added.

    The two men had been placed in the accommodation centre by UNHCR while their cases were being processed, after complaining of "security problems" in Nairobi, Nyabera said. They were the only Sudanese in the hostel, which was very well guarded and secure, he added.

    "UNHCR abhors this barbaric act and will support all efforts to find and bring the perpetrators to justice," said UNHCR acting Representative, Said Arun-Sala-Ngarm, in a statement.
