The first radio programme in a series aimed at sensitising Sierra Leone's population about next month's general elections was broadcast by Radio UNAMSIL on Monday morning, Margaret Novicki, spokesperson for the UN Mission in Sierra Leone (UNAMSIL), told IRIN.
The three-hour-long programme, 'Election Watch,' aims to cover electoral activities around the country, provide public education on electoral issues and give all political parties equal opportunity to air time. It will also devote "core time" to electoral issues of concern to vulnerable groups, including internally displaced persons, disabled people, women and children, UNAMSIL said.
'Election Watch' can be heard Mondays to Fridays from 7:30 to 10:30 on FM 103 and SW 6140 KHZ.
Two presidential debates are to be organised and broadcast by Radio UNAMSIL in collaboration with the Sierra Leone Broadcasting Service and other stakeholders on 29 April and 3 May. On election day, 14 May, Radio UNAMSIL will provide live coverage until the announcement of final results.
Meanwhile, in its ongoing voter education outreach programme, performing artists from UNAMSIL's Community Liaison Unit will begin a tour on Tuesday of all districts at the chiefdom level to disseminate information on the elections.
