Boat in South Kivu hijacked by Mayi-Mayi with 25 aboard

A boat traveling from Fizi to Uvira with 25 people on board has been hijacked by Mayi-Mayi tribal warriors, the BBC reported on Wednesday. People from Uvira told the BBC that the passengers may be found except for the Munyamulenge (Congolese Tutsi, singular) who was among them, since the Banyamulenge (plural) are reportedly being pursued. According to the BBC, similar security problems also prevail in Katobo, where last week Mayi-Mayi fighters and Interahamwe who were attacking Banyamulenge clashed with Rwandan-backed Rassemblement congolais pour la democratie (RCD-Goma) rebels. Two people were reported killed and more than 20 houses burned. The BBC noted that the Mayi-Mayi have been strengthened by Interahamwe troops “searching for a path [from which] to attack Rwanda.”
