Lower Shabelle Region in southern Somalia is reported generally calm after widespread tension following fighting in the southern port of Kismayo earlier this motnh, local sources told IRIN on Tuesday. The southern region had been reported tense following the fight to control Kismayo port, 500 km south of Mogadishu, between forces of the pro-Transitional National Government (TNG) Juba Valley Alliance (JVA) and those of the opposition Somali Reconciliation and Restoration Council (SRRC), led by General Muhammad Sa’id Hirsi Morgan.
Despite a recent report of fighting in Marka, 100 km south of Mogadishu, local sources said the coastal town was “normal”. Humanitarian sources in Marka told IRIN on Tuesday that security in the region had improved after the fighting between the JVA and the SRRC reduced. Barawe town, which had been tense following reported land-mine incidents in July, was also described as “back to normal”. Abdishakur Muhammad, a Barawe businessman told IRIN that there had been no land-mine incidents in the last three weeks.
