About US 14 million pledged for DDR

About US $14.5 million has been pledged for disarmament, demobilisation and reintegration (DDR) in Sierra Leone since an appeal for US $31 million in DDR support was made at an international donors conference in May, a state body in Freetown reported on Friday.

The National Committee for Disarmament, Demobilisation and Reintegration (NCDDR) said the pledges came from the European Commission, (10 million euros, equivalent to US $8.9 million, Germany (10 million DM, equivalent to US $4.6 million), and Sweden (6 million kr, equivalent to $975,457).

The executive director of the NCDDR, Francis Kai-Kai, has described the ongoing DDR programmes as the gateway to achieving lasting peace in the country. He said that expected donor contributions would go to providing “insertion packages” for the tens of thousands of ex-combatants being demobilised. Other DDR programmes would be undertaken once disarmament and demobilisation was complete, he added.
