Zimbabwe’s High Court on Friday again postponed an application by 21 white farmers charged with inciting public violence after clashes with war veterans who had occupied their land. A lawyer for the farmers, Lawrence Chibwe, told Reuters that High Court Judge Rita Makarau said she needed more time to prepare her judgment.
“She said she wanted to make a reasoned judgment and had realised she’d needed more time to prepare it.
The ruling has been postponed to Monday in open court,” Chibwe was quoted saying. The farmers were arrested on 6 August for allegedly assaulting supporters of President Robert Mugabe on a white-owned farm occupied by self-styled war veterans backed by the government. Lawyers representing the government had argued that releasing the men would trigger more violence in Chinyohi, in Mashonaland West, were they were detained.
