Police tear gas demonstrations

Togolese police used tear gas to break up a demonstration on Saturday by opposition parties and human rights activists demanding the release of opposition leader Yawovi Agboyib, sentenced last week to six months imprisonment for defamation, news organizations reported. He was convicted for saying in 1998 that the current prime minister, Messan Kodjo, was associated with a militia whose members killed a supporter of Agboyib’s party, the Comite action pour le renouveau, BBC reported.
