Lokeris outlines Karomojong disarmament plan

The government had already embarked on a programme to disarm Karamojong warriors in northeastern Uganda and block avenues to illegal importation of guns, State Minister for Karamoja Development Peter Lokeris told Radio Uganda on Friday. Lokeris said the government would soon be recruiting Local Defence Force [paramilitary] personnel to back up the army [Uganda People’s Defence Forces] in carrying out the exercise at sub-county level. Those willing to surrender their guns would be encouraged to do so but force would be applied where necessary, he said. The minister also announced plans to deploy security forces at all strategic border points with Sudan in order to prevent further illegal importation of arms, Radio Uganda reported.
