No munitions missing from Defence HQ, spokesman says

Sierra Leone military spokesman Major John Milton denied on Monday newspaper reports that a large cache of arms and ammunition was missing from Defence Headquarters at Cockeril, in the capital, Freetown.

“This is untrue,” he told IRIN.
However, he conceded that a “small amount” of small arms ammunition was reported missing from Barracks Services, a department within the army that stocks and monitors issues of items such as fuel, oil, vehicles, bedding and some types of ammunition. The army has called in civilian police to investigate because it says it does not wish to fan public alarm or suspicion. Although there was no cause for alarm, he said, the army treated all issues concerning ammunition very seriously, “even blanks”.
