UNHCR to help Kambia upgrade community projects

    ABIDJAN

    UNHCR has decided to help communities in war-damaged areas in the northern district of Kambia to upgrade their schools and homes in anticipation of an influx of returnees, the UN agency said in its latest report on the situation of the country.

    It made this decision after evaluating reports by pre-assessment missions that visited the district in June.

    UNHCR reported that thousands of Sierra Leonean refugees were still in the Forecariah region in western Guinea. “Some of these have been engaged in farming,” it said, “and do not plan to return until after harvest. Those ready to return have been impeded by the lack of shelter and food back home.”
