Mauritania’s government has set the minimum age for marriage at 18 years with a view to promoting women’s and family rights, AFP reported the country’s communication minister, Rashid ould Saleh as saying.
The minimum wage, which did not exist before, is included in a new family code that also stipulates that couples must marry before an administrative authority in addition to traditional marriages performed by local religious leaders. The authorities hope the code will alleviate marital problems that have persisted for decades in the absence of official legislation, AFP reported Ould Saleh as saying.
