Unknown number of people displaced

An unknown number of people have been displaced from Kanyosha commune, Bujumbura Rural province in Burundi in the past two weeks, humanitarian sources said. “People from Kavumu and Nyabibondo are scattered, with most living with other families,” a humanitarian worker told IRIN on Wednesday. “There has also been an increase in the number of people visiting the Ruyaga health post, from 180 to 250 in the last few days. This is an indication that there is an increase in the number of people in the area,” the official added. The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said it was trying to verify the situation with the Burundi authorities to ascertain the numbers involved and their condition. AFP reported on Tuesday that two civilians were killed in fighting between rebels and the army near Bujumbura. It said that the fighting had prompted some 20,000 people to flee the area. It quoted an administrative official as saying that a man and a woman were killed in the town of Buziga on Tuesday.
