Grain harvest this year falls short

Deputy Agriculture Minister Askar Myrzakhmetov told the Russian news agency Interfax on Tuesday that Kazakhstan had threshed 13.27 mt of grain this year, falling short of 1999’s harvest of 14.2 mt, but exceeding the forecast for the year. Northern Akmola, the Northern Kazakhstan and Kustanai regions, the country’s chief grain planting areas, accounted for 9.289 mt of the total harvest. Grain was sown over 12.3 million hectares in 2000, as compared with last year’s 11.3 million, the report said.
