The mission - intended to promote and ensure regular humanitarian access to the populations worst hit by the ongoing war - visited Malemba Nkulu, and delegation participants pledged to undertake nutrition, market-garden, health and sanitation projects for the population of 190,000 and 44,000 IDPs. UNOCHA reported the arrival by train, barge and road without any major impediments of a 300 mt consignment of food from Lubumbashi. It also pre-positioned six tonnes of non-food and medical supplies in Lubumbashi to be dispatched to Ankoro shortly by Memisa-Belgium, the report said.
Following the gruesome account of conditions in western Kasai by the recent UN Security Council delegation to the DRC, the multi-agency mission also delivered an initial lot of two tonnes of food in Kananga, destined for Demba - a sensitive and embattled frontline position northwest of Kananga. Beyond strengthening humanitarian interventions, the situation in Katanga and Kasai required urgent implementation of the Lusaka peace agreement in order to reduce insecurity and allow the resumption of two-way economic exchanges across the current frontlines, OCHA added.
