The Mozambican government in coordination with UNHCR is to open a centre for refugees in the northern Nampula Province.
A spokeswoman for UNHCR in Maputo told IRIN on Monday that the centre would house an estimated 250 families and would cater for any refugees. “At this stage most of the influx of refugees is from the Great Lakes area,” she said.
“We are still in the preliminary phases and trying to identify suitable sites in the province,” she said.
Meanwhile, the spokeswoman also told IRIN that that UNHCR was in the process of making contingency plans for the possible influx of Zimbabwean refugees into Mozambique.
“The plans that we are making fall within our international mandate. Basically we are making sure that should we see a large number of people from Zimbabwe enter Mozambique, that we have shelter, food and medicines for them. Basically ensuring that we have the necessary social services,” she said.
