Nearly 80,000 displaced persons in Freetown

    ABIDJAN

    The United Nations estimates that it needs to provide food for up to 79,000 internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Freetown, based on an inter-agency assessment mission to Waterloo, in the Freetown peninsula, this week.

    Of these, 20,000 are new IDPs, people displaced by recent hostilities outside the peninsula. Another 15,000 have been displaced again into Freetown from Waterloo, where they had been forced to abandon in earlier hostilities.

    Some 10,000 are longstanding IDPs within Freetown who, largely because they were not staying in IDP camps, had not yet been registered. There are also 34,000 people who were displaced when rebels stormed parts of the capital in January 1999.

    WFP began the registrations on Friday.
