Food aid update

During October WFP helped an estimated 182,000 people in Mozambique, the agency’s latest emergency report said on Monday. It said that an estimated 2,000 mt of food were delivered to flood victims in the five affected provinces in southern and central parts of the country. WFP said that it “expected” the food pipeline to remain secure until early December.

According to WFP, crop production surveys conducted in the past three weeks in the southern Gaza province, showed that vulnerability had shifted from areas currently targeted with food relief to new areas. “The main reason is a relatively successful yield from the late second harvest in areas near the Limpopo river ... while populations situated a greater distance from the river on higher but less fertile land have produced very little,” it noted. WFP said it was assisting the government with contingency planning at the central level and was preparing its own plans to be integrated into the UN contingency plan.
