Refugee numbers increase

    JOHANNESBURG

    Malawi is experiencing an increasing number of refugees from Burundi, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), UNHCR officials told IRIN on Monday.

    The official said 1,705 refugees are now accommodated at Dzaleka refugee camp in the central district of Dowa, about 50 km east of the capital, Lilongwe.

    The official added that eight of the refugees were Eritreans. “Some of the refugees are involved in income-generating activities while their applications for asylum are being considered,” the UNHCR official said.
