Detained NGO workers brought to Kabul

As violence plagues large parts of Afghanistan civilians are increasingly affected and denied access to essential health services Akmal Dawi/IRIN

The detained employees of Italian health NGO Emergency have been brought to Kabul on charges of “terrorist activities” and involvement in a plot to assassinate the governor of Helmand Province, officials say.

“They are with national security officials in Kabul,” Dawood Ahmadi, a spokesman for the Helmand governor, told IRIN.

Three Italians and six Afghans working for the NGO were arrested on 10 April in Lashkargah, the capital of Helmand. Emergency has rejected as “groundless” the allegations against them.

The NGO’s hospital in Lashkargah remains closed, with its patients having been taken to another hospital, Ahmadi said.
