Israel's 2009 budget is earmarking US$25 million for local NGOs and aid organisations, many of whom have been left strapped for cash in the wake of the global financial crisis.

Social Affairs Minister Issac Herzog told reporters: “This is a crucial step for saving the social organisations and the livelihoods of thousands of workers.”

According to Israel's Social Affairs Ministry, some 20 percent of the population will need welfare support in 2009. Over 85 percent of welfare services in Israel are provided by NGOs and local municipalities. Many NGOs had feared they might be forced to close down.
