The ruling Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD) has expelled Environment Minister Ben Mwila, charging him with launching a premature campaign for the party presidency, PANA reported.
MMD spokesman Vernon Mwaanga said on Saturday that the party had expelled a total of 11 members, including five MPs, in an attempt to instil discipline. The decision to remove Mwila was taken at a National Executive Committee meeting on Friday chaired by President Frederick Chiluba.
Leading MMD figures have been jockeying for position since Chiluba announced he would not run for a third term in elections in 2001. Mwila, who loses his ministerial post and parliamentary seat through his expulsion was quoted as saying on Saturday: "I have still got a vision and mission to fulfil, this mission must be accomplished."
