Female genital mutilation outlawed in Cross River

    ABIDJAN

    Female genital mutilation and marriages involving girls under the age of 18 has been made illegal in southeastern Cross River State, newspapers reported on Thursday.

    The ban is part of a bill aimed at stopping violence and abuse against girls, which was signed into law on Tuesday by Governor Donald Duke. Anyone who contravenes the statute will pay a fine of between 1,000 naira (US $9) and 10,000 naira (US $90) or spend one to three years in prison, ‘The Guardian’ reported.
