Kisangani deployment “still a priority”

    Questioned about the proposed deployment of a Pakistani battalion in the northeastern city of Kisangani, Eckhard said military deployment there was still a priority for MONUC and that the UN was working with troop-contributing countries so that it could proceed. The Pakistani troops had been inspected by the UN and were ready to be deployed within a week of an agreement with the rebel Rassemblement congolais pour la democratie (RCD) to withdraw their troops from the town, Lt-Col Khalid Khan, MONUC’s officer in charge in Kisangani, told IRIN.
