Water experts from the Southern African Development Community (SADC) have said plans on a feasibility study to pump water from the Congo River to the rest of the region have reached an advanced stage, ‘The Namibian’ reported on Thursday.
SADC water officials said efforts were well underway to set up a pipeline to stretch over 1,000 km from the Congo River. Phera Ramoeli of SADC’s water sector said that the idea was to look for the most economical and environmentally-friendly option when they decided on the pipeline. Namibia was currently conducting a pre-feasibility study after the country developed its pipeline proposal through SADC.
Most countries in the region share watercourse systems, notably the Okavango Delta shared between Namibia, Botswana and Angola, and the Zambezi River shared by Angola, Botswana, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe, the officials said.
