Government asks refugees to respect laws

    NAIROBI

    Prime Minister Pascoal Mocumbi has appealed to refugees in Mozambique to to respect its laws, saying they were free to settle in the country if they so desired, news reports said.

    Mocumbi, who was speaking on Thursday at a press briefing in Maputo, was reacting to recent demonstrations by more than 100 refugees from the Great Lakes region in front of the Maputo headquarters of the UNHCR. The refugees called for improved living conditions and their transfer to a European country.

    The refugees, currently living at the Bobole camp, about 40 km north of Maputo, have complained about poor housing, food and health care.
